Taco of the Week

Chilaquiles, Claudia’s Restaurant. Crispy tortilla chips are just starting to soften in this warm blanket of scrambled eggs mixed with peppers, tomatoes and onions. The heat melts the American cheese to keep it all together in a fresh flour tortilla for just $1.75.

The week in tacos, Feb. 19-25

Lisa’s Mexican Restaurant: If you like the look and feel of a Chili’s, you’ll feel right at home in Lisa’s. Fajita sizzle platters sail by, casting the hypnotic vapors of Mexican food refined for a mass market. Best taco: Chicken fajita. 815 Bandera Road, 210-433-2531, lisasmexican-hub.com

Chile, Tomate y Cebolla: This small storefront cafe is popular with Jefferson High School students and regulars who come for carne asada, hot coffee and great flour tortillas. Best taco: Puerco en chile colorado. 1009 Donaldson Ave., 210-736-0223, Facebook: Chile, Tomate y Cebolla

Mi Celayence: A morning here was a rowdy session of wandering minstrels, homeless ranting, studied indifference and breakfast tacos at three for $3. Best taco: Papas rancheras. 2903 Fredericksburg Road, 210-732-1122, no web presence

Claudia’s Restaurant: Claudia Ayon opened her restaurant in November after running Claudia’s Tacos truck on Division Street. The taco-truck spirit abides in fresh, value-priced tacos. Best taco: Chilaquiles. 1305 Pleasanton Road, 210-362-1204, Facebook: Claudia’s Restaurant

La Amistad Tortillería: When they’re not selling masa or tortillas, a lot of tortillerías do a little side business as carnicerías. And since they’re already selling the starter kits, why not throw “taquería” into the mix? Best taco: Barbacoa a la mexicana. 2754 Culebra Road, 210-435-0561, laamistadtortilleria.ipage.com

Mi Guadalajara: Built on the bones of a former fast-food place, Mi Guadalajara starts with table service, chips and free fideo, then backs it up with tacos so good they make you forget how cheap they are. Best taco: Lengua ranchera. 1151 Culebra Road, 210-737-2711, no web presence

El Gallito de Jalisco: On this international corner — with a pub, a barbecue joint and a halal market — El Gallito represents the Mexican state of Jalisco. But don’t hold that against Jalisco. Best taco: Pierna de puerco. 9226 Wurzbach Road, 210-614-7114, no web presence

Week 5 winner: Mendez Cafe

Week 4 winner: Tacos Y Burritos Metro Basilica 2

Week 3 winner: El Buen Gusto Mexican Cafe

Week 2 winner: Taco Haven
