Lionsgate wants a spin-off series Orange Is the New Black

in mid-October, Netflix said the fate of Orange Is the New Black: his famous prison drama will end in 2019 with the seventh season. But the producer of the series, Lionsgate Television, is not willing to say goodbye and is already working on a spin-off.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Beggs, president of Lionsgate TV, has announced its intention to develop a spin-off series of the drama created by Jenji Kohan. "We are really proud of the long journey that Orange Is the New Black has had," he said. "It continues to be one of the series more views of Netflix. We will end up in high. Keep in mind that we are the owners of the series and distribute during the next few years. We are already having conversations and, when the time is right, we'll talk more with Jenji about a possible sequel," he explained.

Sources from the magazine ensure that these meetings between Lionsgate and Kohan have occurred, but for the moment there is not a specific project for the potential spin-off.

Based on the book of the same name and the prison experience of Piper Kerman, Orange Is the New Black debuted on Netflix in 2013. The cast, mostly women, is led by Taylor Schilling, Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, Laura Prepon and Laverne Cox. On the 27th of July, Netflix premiered the sixth season of the series and it is expected that the seventh and final installment is issued in the summer of 2019.

The sequels, prequels and other derivative products are a growing trend in american television, given the growing competition. With over 520 productions a year, strings in open, cable, and streaming services are looking for in well-known properties a way to stand out from the crowd. Without going more far, HBO works in a number of series derived from the Game of thrones has already given the green light to the pilot of one of these projects.
