Militants and supporters of the PSOE ask the leadership to rectify its change of position on the Sahara in favor of Morocco

A group of militants and supporters of the PSOE grouped in the Socialists for the Sahara initiative held a meeting last Friday with the Secretary for International Policy and Development Cooperation of the Executive Commission of the PSOE, Hana Jalloul, in which they asked the party to rectify the position adopted on this territory.

As they have indicated, they have demanded the "rectification and clarification of the position adopted unilaterally on the situation of Western Sahara" and that the PSOE and the Government act in accordance with the commitments acquired and the responsibility that Spain has for the conclusion of the decolonization process and exercise of the right of self-determination of the Saharawi people.

The meeting takes place after last week they made public a manifesto in support of Western Sahara and against the turn of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with respect to this territory, to which 600 signatures have been added, including that of the former Deputy Odón Elorza.

In the text, to which they ask for adhesions, they proclaim their defense of the position adopted by the PSOE in its electoral program and in the resolutions of the 40th Congress, held in October 2021 and therefore "of the Charter of the United Nations and the right inalienable right of the Saharawi people to self-determination".

In April 2022, the head of the Executive took the step of supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara as "the most solid, realistic and credible base", a turn with respect to the historical neutral position that Spain had maintained regarding this matter. .

Critical militants stress that the PSOE must reflect, "clarify its position" and be "consistent" with the defense of the right to self-determination and its congressional resolutions.

In any case, after this Friday's meeting, the Socialists for the Sahara delegation highlighted Jalloul's "disposition to listen" and his commitment to maintaining communication. In the same way, they hope to deepen the open dialogue with the party leadership, according to what they say.

They also stress that the position they defend is shared by hundreds of affiliates and sympathizers and represents the feelings "of a very significant part of the socialist militancy on the Sahara conflict. They also celebrate that this meeting is an important step to spark the necessary debate on the position taken.
