He was known for his roles in Edward Scissorhands, Argo or Little Miss Sunshine. American actor Alan Arkin died at the age of 89 on Friday, June 30, his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony announced in a press release sent to People magazine. He died at his home in California.
“Our father was a force of nature and a very talented artist. He was a loving husband, a great father and a great grandfather. He was loved by all. He will be greatly missed,” his sons wrote in the statement.
He began his career in 1957 in Calypso Heat Wave, then was at the height of his career when he turned in the films The Russians are coming, in 1966, a satire on the cold war, then The heart is a lonely hunter, in 1968 , when he portrays a deaf-mute. For these two roles, he was twice nominated for the Best Actor Oscar. He will be rewarded in 2006, in a supporting role, for the feature film Little Miss Sunshine, before being nominated, again in this same category, for Argo, in 2012, a film by Ben Affleck, where he plays an old man .
In his seventy-year career, he had specialized in deadpan people and truly made a name for himself in the comedy Don’t Shoot the Dentist, an American comedy classic released in 1979.
His filmography also includes Catch 22, an adaptation of the novel by Mike Nichols, as well as Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands.
Alan Arkin was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in The Kominsky Method, a Netflix series where he plays alongside Michael Douglas.
