Americans should show support for carbon dividend | Letter

The time to act is now. Conservatives and progressives, Republicans and Democrats have to come together to address the very real risks associated with climate change.

The Express-Times has taken a necessary first step in publishing the Dallas Morning News editorial, "Conservative group's carbon plan could lead to climate-change action." The carbon dividend proposed by the Climate Leadership Council is a market-based solution that taxes carbon and returns funds in the form of dividends to citizens. This is a solution that conservatives can support and progressives should support.

I urge readers in the Lehigh Valley to engage in conversations with local, state, and federal politicians about a carbon dividend as one solution to climate change. Regardless of the opinion and actions of those currently in the White House, we can agree on solutions. And as soon as we agree on the solutions we can act on them.

To paraphrase the Chinese proverb about the best time to plant a tree: The best time to act on climate change was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
