Dad, 73, allegedly attacks daughter with marble obelisk

An Allentown man is accused of beating his daughter with a marble obelisk, seriously injuring her on the head.

Gerald Smith reportedly admitted to police that he hit his daughter, but only after she accused him of stealing her money and teeth.

Smith was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of a crime, simple assault and harassment. He was sent to Lehigh County Jail in lieu of 10 percent of $20,000 bail.

The victim suffered several large cuts on her head, and was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township for treatment of her injuries, police said.

Police said they were called Monday night to Smith's apartment in the first block of North 15th Street for a reported domestic assault.

They found Smith's daughter outside the apartment building screaming and crying, and bleeding from head wounds, police said.

Smith told officers he first punched his daughter in the face, but she continued to "come at him," police said. Smith allegedly hit his daughter at least twice with an Egyptian monolith, and officers found a 7.5-pound marble pillar with blood on it on the floor near the front door.
