At least 138 dead in tribal clashes in Darfur

Tribal clashes in Darfur, in the western part of Sudan, left at least 138 dead in the last three weeks, doctors reported this Thursday.

Violence erupted for the first time on November 17 among pastors of armed dromedaries, in the mountains of Jebel Moon, in Darfur west.

Saturday, other armed clashes were produced in the Krink region, also in Darfur West, between rival groups.

"Many of the wounded died because they could not reach medical facilities, and community clinics in rural areas are not equipped," said the Committee of Physicians, a union of the area.

According to the Committee, the total number of death was 138, including 25 people who died on Wednesday at Jebel Moon. At least 106 were injured.

Darfur, an extensive region regularly whipped by the clashes, especially caused by territorial disputes and water access problems, was a scene of a long war that caused from 2003 at least 300,000 deaths and 2.5 million displaced persons, according to the UN.
