Swimming in rivers and lakes: Drowning happens silently

a Few hot days there has been this summer already, for the next week, the summer, expect temperatures. Against the heat, a jump into the cool water helps, preferably in the outdoor pool, where then the lawn and the Fries lying curls. In the Corona-pandemic, the water fun in the outdoor swimming pool is limited, however, strong and regulated. Many, therefore, differ in natural waters, swimming in lakes and rivers.

How dangerous that can be, to show the drowning accidents of the past few weeks. In the community of Trebur in the district of Groß-Gerau drowned at the end of June, a thirty-one year old trying to save your son from the Rhine, and had carried away the flow. The five-year-old survived also. Last Saturday a nineteen-year-old from Griesheim died, after he had gone Swimming in Bickenbach Erlensee, all of a sudden.

Many overestimate their strength

Many would be in danger, because they overestimated their forces, says Michael Hohmann, President of the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft Hessen. In the swimming pool, the Situation is manageable: "There you can look down to the bottom, and the distance to the nearest pool edge is not more than 25 meters." Anyone who is not trained and up in the middle of a lake swim, I notice more often than not, the condition is slowly disappearing. "100 to 200 meters, the size of the lakes, nothing." In rivers, the high flow speed to be added as a further challenge. "Lack of training due to the closure of the baths in the municipalities ensures that many people can no longer swim so good," says Michael Wenzel, an employee of the management group of water protection police Hesse, Germany.

From bathing in rivers such as the Main or Rhine DLRG and water protection police generally advise. Officially forbidden to bathe in Hesse driveways but only in certain places such as in port or in the immediate vicinity of bridges, locks and boat docks. In the Rhine Swimming in the distance of 100 meters is prohibited above to 50 feet below such structures. In all other waters is 100 meters. In addition, there are in many cities long shore sections, in which bathing is prohibited.

The vessels caused strong currents that are pulling the water to the middle. "You can think of this as the ebb and flood, when the water goes away in the first place and then suddenly back comes up." Especially children ran after the water and bring to unintentionally in danger.
