The Extrego municipalities of Villanueva de la Serena and Don Benito give one step more for his purpose of merging. The Council of Ministers has authorized the popular consultation on its merger. On both previous occasions, citizens endorsed the merger. The Government supports the purpose of these municipalities because it considers that it is a process that will allow a "more efficient management of funds and public resources". "Two municipalities that have wanted to add forces, maximum collaboration and put into value as positive for good neighborhood," Isabel Rodríguez, Minister of Territorial Policy and Executive Spokesman.
The question that will be considered to the neighbors is as follows: do you agree that the City Council of Don Benito (or Villanueva de la Serena, where appropriate), exercises the initiative for the processing of the merger procedure with the municipality of Villanueva of La Serena (or Don Benito)?
The result of the eventual process of merger would imply the creation of a new local entity that would be the second most populated in the province of Badajoz - with more than 60,000 inhabitants and an extension of 713 square kilometers - and would constitute an economic development pole with special incidence In the agri-food sector, in addition to facilitating a more efficient management of public services and resources through the application of economies of scale. A fusion of much more magnitude and entity than those of the Galician municipalities, of much less entity.
In the event that the vote of 66% of the participants in the consultation in both municipalities, local corporations will exercise the initiative of the merger process, whose final decision corresponds to the Autonomous Community of Extremadura.
