The PP has put in question the legality of the Spanish Rescue Mission in Afghanistan for having been carried out without the authorization of the Congress of Deputies. That approach extending legal doubts about the operation has caused a tough response from the defense minister, Margarita Robles, who has accused the popular to act with "absolute ignorance" and with an eagerness to politically use that crisis.
The controversy goes back to statements from the Secretary of Justice and Interior of the PP, Henry López, which has indicated that as it was a "military action outside Spain" may require "prior authorization from the Congress, according to article 17 of the Law of National defense".
López alludes to the evacuation operation carried out by military and police together with diplomats in Afghanistan, to take Afghan collaborators from the country from the country after the victory of the Taliban.
The article cited by López said that in the missions abroad that are not directly related to the defense of Spain or the national interest, the Government will conduct a prior consultation and will seek the authorization of the Congress of Deputies. The law collects that those actions that require a rapid or immediate response due to "international commitments", these procedures will be carried out through emergency procedures and if this is not possible for reasons of "maximum urgency" the government will submit to Congress " Possible "The decision you have adopted.
Hours later, the defense minister has responded to the PP with a very critical tone, rejecting this type of words; "I want to manifest my absolute stupor before the PP's statements questioning the performance that is being done by the armed forces in Afghanistan," the minister has replicated in a video.
ROBLES has assured that these words produce "" "" embarrassment ". But in addition, he has accused" absolute ignorance "to the Popular Party, since he says that the performance of the Spanish military is framed within the 'Resolute Support' operation of the NATO, in which Spain has participated during the last 19 years.
In this sense, he has underlined that the "only purpose" of the armed forces in this operation is to "save lives" and has said that the PP shows "once again" lack of sense of state "with his doubts.Updated Date: 26 August 2021, 08:56
