The price of light recommends its maximum levels and will reach its highest record in almost 20 years. The cost of a megawatt hour will be 101.82 euros, the second highest level in history. A prohibitive price that coincides with the heat wave that hits the country and keeps 19 provinces in alert by high temperatures, gaining the cost of operating the air conditioner.
The new record is already approaching the marking on January 11, 2002, when the cost of light touched 103.76 euros. That month, however, the average price stayed at 61 euros, thirty euros less than average cost recorded in the first 20 days of July. That is, the record of 2002 was an anecdote if compared to the maintenance of the price at historical levels in a prolonged way in this month of July, which is what it really has been impacting on the monthly receipt of millions of households and companies.
The current increase in the cost of light responds to the increase in the international gas quotation and the increase in CO2 emission rights in Europe. Both factors are affected by thermal gas plants to the electricity market, and running with a marginalist model all agents that offer their megawatts time to the market have ended up charging that cost.
