It is the most white painting in the world according to the book Guiness of the records. However, the objective of its creators has not been to appear in the famous anecdote, but to seek economic alternatives to the widespread employment of air conditioning.
With the aim of saving in energy as a backdrop, this peculiar white painting is an invention of the University of Purdue (Indiana, USA) and for its development they have needed more than seven years. "When we started with this project we had in mind saving energy and fighting climate change," says the mechanical energy teacher, Xiulin Ruan, who has led this project.
A project that emerged during the Ruan classes with its college students while discussing the possibility of creating an outdoor painting that was able to reflect the radiation of sunlight and get the surface impregnated by it had a temperature below the Objects of your environment without impregnating by said painting.
Unlike conventional paintings that can be found in marking, the painting developed at this university has a high concentration of barium sulfate (a common use compound in beauty products and photography) present in particles of different size.
In this way, the university group was able to develop a painting capable of reflecting 98.1% of solar radiation while emitting infrared heat. Two properties that make it an ideal replacement of air conditioning systems.
This occurs because the paint absorbs less heat from the sunlight than the one that emits the object impregnated with it achieving that the painted surface has a temperature lower than its environment without the need to consume energy.
Meanwhile, the paintings that can be purchased in the market only reflect between 80% and 90% of solar radiation and do not get that the object of which are impregnated is colder than its surroundings.
To understand the benefits offered by the painting developed by Ruan and his students in front of the products that can be found in the market, from the university they explain that if it is used to paint a roof with an area of 92 square meters, the interior of the structure Experience a cooling equivalent to that is achieved using air conditioners powered by 10 kilowatts of power. A figure higher than "most conditioned air installed in homes," says Rouen.
Although it is an invention recently presented by the university, the painting developed by Ruan and its students will be found soon on sale thanks to an agreement between the University and a private company that will take care of its commercialization and distribution.Updated Date: 23 September 2021, 01:52
