"A League of Their Own": Cult baseball film gets serial offshoot

In 1992, Geena Davis, Madonna and Lori Petty touched the hearts of viewers in the sports drama "A Class of Their Own". 30 years later, "A League of Their Own" is in series for the second time. But does the charm of the original remain?

Penny Marshall's comedic sports drama "A Class of Its Own" is certainly not one of the best sports films in Hollywood, but the now 30-year-old work cannot be denied a certain charm and cult status. While the topic of the female professional baseball league founded in the USA in 1943 still had an exotic touch in 1992, it is surprising these days that a new film adaptation of the material has been so long in coming.

After the unsuccessful attempt to establish the film as a sitcom on TV in the early 1990s, the new series on Prime Video is now being rebooted. The themes are more complex and contemporary, the cast is well cast down to the supporting roles and clearly shows enthusiasm. Even if not all storylines seamlessly intertwine and lengths creep in, the series landscape with "A League of Their Own" has been enriched by some strong female roles.
