As Gary Glitter, Brit Paul Francis Gadd made a pop star career in the 1970s. But in his private life things are not glamorous, but rather dark. Child abuse has been proven multiple times. Now he is being released from prison at the age of 78.

Former pop star Gary Glitter is free after eight years in prison for multiple child molestation charges. The 78-year-old left prison after serving half of his sentence, the PA news agency reports, citing its own information.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February 2015 for several cases dating back to the 1970s. In the UK it is common for a halfway sentence to be suspended on probation.

The Sun and Daily Mail newspapers report that strict conditions have been imposed on Glitter. He must wear an electronic tag, give the authorities a week's notice of foreign travel and if he is to enter into a relationship with a person who has a minor child.

Upon his return to the UK, Glitter was arrested and eventually convicted in connection with the abuse scandal involving former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile. It was only after Savile died in 2011 that it became public that he was what Scotland Yard called "the worst sex offender in the country's history". Glitter was convicted of complicity. Specifically, attempted rape, sexual assault and sexual acts with a minor could be proven.
