Baden-Württemberg: 14 people drowned in the southwest in 2022 by July

Damp (dpa / lsw) - In the first seven months of this year, at least 14 people drowned in Baden-Württemberg. Despite the partly midsummer temperatures, this is 9 fewer than at the same time last year (as of July 21). This was announced by the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) on Thursday. The situation is different nationwide, because there the number is at least 199 drowned in the same period - an increase of 15 compared to the same period last year.

Overall, the number of bathers in Baden-Württemberg's lakes, rivers and other bodies of water had already fallen slightly last year. 35 people died in this way, compared to 39 people the year before, according to the DLRG.

8 people died in Baden-Württemberg waters last June alone. Among them were a small child in a garden pond in Spechbach (Rhein-Neckar district) and a 15-year-old non-swimmer who was in a lake near Meißenheim (Ortenau district) with another young person. Two people each died in May and July.

Most swimmer deaths between January and July were men. Two women also died. Five people each died in rivers and lakes, two more in a swimming pool, one person in a pond and one in a canal.
