Baden-Württemberg: 25 million euros for on-call taxis and minibuses in rural areas

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - The Ministry of Transport will support public transport on request in the country over the next three years with 25 million euros. Minister of Transport Winfried Hermann said on Wednesday in Stuttgart that the public transport offer had to be expanded in an appropriate way, especially in rural areas. "On-demand traffic is ideal here to ensure an economically viable and ecologically sensible public transport service in areas and at times of low traffic demand."

The funding program is intended to provide financial support to municipal authorities in setting up and operating flexible and needs-based offers. In some sparsely populated regions, local public transport with a fixed bus schedule is not economical. In order to guarantee comprehensive public transport in these areas as well, public transport on order is the means of choice here. For example, minibuses or call taxis could be ordered via smartphone.
