Achern (dpa / lsw) - A 72-year-old died in a serious traffic accident on Autobahn 5 near the Achern junction (Ortenaukreis district). He was about to set up a warning triangle when he was hit by a car, police said on Wednesday. The man died at the scene of the accident. There had previously been minor rear-end collisions on the route towards Basel.
According to the police, a car left its lane on Wednesday morning, skidded and came to a stop in the left lane. This led to two minor rear-end collisions between the vehicle, two other cars and a pickup truck that the 72-year-old was driving. Those involved were about to secure the scene of the accident when another car drove up and fatally injured the 72-year-old in the left lane. The car also collided with the stationary vehicles at the scene of the accident.
According to the police, there is no trace of the driver of the car that caused the accident and possible passengers. The search with a drone was initially unsuccessful. The police are now investigating a hit-and-run accident.
The motorway was initially completely blocked in the direction of Basel. According to the police, the hard shoulder was released again around noon.
