Baden-Württemberg: 75 percent of trucks could drive through the Freiburg tunnel

Freiburg (dpa / lsw) - According to a current study, the planned Freiburg motorway city tunnel could still significantly relieve the current through-road of traffic. At least 75 percent of truck traffic could shift to the tunnel, announced the Autobahn GmbH Southwest branch on Tuesday. If you look at the total traffic of trucks and cars, about two thirds could drive through the tunnel. The forecast up to the year 2040, with an assumed slight increase in traffic, is roughly at the values already known.

The through road through the city of Freiburg is part of the west-east axis of the federal highway 31 from the Rhine Valley to the A81 near Geisingen (Tuttlingen district) and continues on the B311 to Ulm. The route in Freiburg is a bottleneck for transit traffic.

The city tunnel is to be built as a motorway (A860) so that the federal government is responsible for planning, construction, operation and financing. It is part of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030. According to preliminary planning from 2012, the costs should amount to around 325.5 million euros. The Autobahn GmbH and the city of Freiburg want to inform citizens in December about the results of the investigation and the next steps in the project.
