Baden-Württemberg: After a fire at a tire dealer, embers are fought

The major fire at a tire dealer caused a lot of damage and gave the firefighters a lot of work. But people in the region will also have to live with the consequences until further notice, warns the district office.

Gammertingen (dpa / lsw) - After the major fire on the premises of a tire dealer in the Swabian Alb, the fire brigade fought individual embers on Monday. The fire in Gammertingen in the district of Sigmaringen itself has been extinguished, said a police spokesman. Excavators pull the embers apart. There were four injured by smoke gases, one person suffered minor injuries after a fall. Fire investigators and forensic technicians are on the premises to investigate the cause of the fire.

The district office warned residents in the area against harvesting and eating sooty fruits and vegetables in gardens. The authorities have samples of the particles examined in a laboratory, and the results should be available in a few days. Herbs and similar plants should be disposed of with soot directly with the residual waste, it said. "Contamination of the drinking water can be ruled out."

The district office advised that contaminated play and sports areas should not be used until they have been analyzed or cleaned. Smooth surfaces can be wiped off with household cleaning agents, and play sand should be replaced. Vehicles could be cleaned in a car wash. Other items could be carefully cleaned. The sewage has to go to the sewer.

According to the tire dealer, only one of eight warehouses was affected by the fire. This is not part of the business operations, since winter tires were stored there, said marketing manager Mike Hummel on request. "The warehouse management ensures that the ordered goods are delivered immediately as planned." The company supports the investigations of the authorities. According to the fire brigade, the hall consists of prefabricated reinforced concrete parts. A ten by four meter part broke off at the weekend. Experts checked whether the hall was in danger of collapsing, said a spokesman for the fire brigade from Sigmaringen.

Tires, vehicles, gas bottles and parts of the warehouse burst into flames on Saturday evening. The owner celebrated his wedding on the company premises where he also lives. According to the police, there were reported fireworks set off by a specialist company. A permit from the city was not required because the burning took place on private property. It was unclear whether the fireworks were the cause of the fire, said the police spokesman. The fire caused damage of several million euros.
