Baden-Württemberg: After shots from service weapons, initially no consequences

With seven shots, two police officers stopped a man who attacked them with a pistol. Was it necessary to use the service weapon? At the moment everything looks like self-defense.

Mannheim/Hockenheim (dpa/lsw) - No disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the police officers who disabled an armed man with seven shots in a case of domestic violence. There is no reason for this, said a spokesman for the police headquarters in Mannheim of the German Press Agency. The behavior of the two officials in Hockenheim (Rhein-Neckar district) was neither illegal nor disproportionate. The public prosecutor's office in Mannheim is still investigating whether the use of firearms last Monday was self-defence.

The officers had been called to help by the ex-partner of the man who was shot. As a result of an argument, the 37-year-old, who was carrying a pistol, holed himself up in the hallway of his ex-girlfriend's house. After about 40 minutes of negotiation, the man, gun in hand, approached officers, who used their firearms to stop him. The 37-year-old, known to the police for drug offenses, was hit several times and injured and taken to a hospital. The man's pistol turned out to be a replica weapon.

The case brings back memories of a fatal police operation in Mannheim in May 2022. A previously injured 31-year-old died after a police shot in the leg. This was preceded by a domestic violence operation.
