Baden-Württemberg: Around 21,400 Ukrainian students registered

Stuttgart/Berlin (dpa/lsw) - Six months after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the number of Ukrainian children and young people registered at schools in Baden-Württemberg has risen to almost 21,400. As the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) announced on Tuesday, the numbers in the federal states and nationwide have risen steadily since the beginning of the war in February. According to Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP), there should be a further increase in the new school year that is now beginning. In some places, compulsory schooling before the summer holidays was not yet strictly enforced and children were initially taught via digital channels from Ukraine, the reasoning was said.

There are a total of around eleven million schoolchildren in Germany. Nationwide, 163,253 refugee schoolchildren from Ukraine were registered last week. The federal states report the numbers to the KMK on a weekly basis.

So far, most students have found accommodation in North Rhine-Westphalia (32,788), Bavaria (27,523) and Baden-Württemberg (21,392).
