Constance (dpa/lsw) - The Asian tiger mosquito was detected for the first time in Constance. The city announced on Thursday that a rod from eleven egg-laying traps on Lake Constance Bay had tested positive. The animals are now to be controlled biologically in the vicinity of the site. For this purpose, a protein is used that kills the larvae of the black and white mosquitoes, but should not harm all other animals and plants.
Since the tiger mosquito, introduced from South and Southeast Asia, lays its eggs in small pools of water, local residents should remove such opportunities - for example by covering rain barrels or emptying bird baths.
Tiger mosquitoes can transmit pathogens such as dengue and Zika viruses through their bites. In Germany, the tiger mosquito was first detected in 2007 near Bad Bellingen (Lörrach district). Since then, the finds have increased, especially in the south-west.
