Baden-Württemberg: Baden-Württemberg and Saxony for compulsory insurance

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg and Saxony want to introduce the reintroduction of compulsory insurance for natural hazards for all building owners in the Prime Ministers' Conference this Thursday. Stuttgart Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) told the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten" (Thursday): "The topic has been discussed several times in federal and state meetings and it's time that a button was put on after the major storm disasters that we experienced in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia had many deaths and huge sums that it cost."

The Greens politician continued: "As a result of climate change, we will have more and more such damage events, which is only possible through compulsory insurance for all property owners, regardless of whether they own commercial or private homes." The Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) told the dpa in Dresden: "It is clear that personal provision must continue to be of great importance." The federal states should work to ensure that the federal government develops a regulatory proposal by the end of 2022.

The justice ministers of the federal states had recently examined the question of whether compulsory insurance violated the constitution. On Wednesday, the conference of justice ministers cleared the way, as the Baden-Württemberg department head Marion Gentges (CDU) confirmed to the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten".

After the flash floods and flooding in several regions in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in the summer of 2021, a debate broke out about how damage from flood disasters could be better protected. According to the latest information from the insurance association GDV, only around 46 percent of buildings in Germany are currently insured by natural hazard insurance, which would step in in the event of heavy rain, flooding or landslides.
