Baden-Württemberg: Baden-Württemberg is the federal state with the most flashes

Munich/Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - In no other state in Germany was lightning struck as often as in Baden-Württemberg in the past year. At the state level, the southwest is at the top with a lightning density of 2.61, ahead of Bavaria, which comes in second with 2.18 lightning strikes per square kilometer. In 2020 there were 1.3 impacts per square kilometer in Baden-Württemberg, in 2019 it was only 0.88.

In a comparison of the districts, Baden-Württemberg is in third place, as can be seen from measurements by Siemens' lightning information service. The district of Starnberg is Germany's lightning stronghold. With a lightning density of 7.6 lightning strikes per square kilometer, the Upper Bavarian district is well ahead of second-placed Augsburg (5.9) and Lake Constance (5.9) in third place.

Across Germany, the number of lightning strikes rose by almost a quarter to around 491,000 last year. Every eleventh of them struck on June 29th, the most lightning day in Germany. At that time, storms had caused severe damage in parts of the Federal Republic. Overall, more than half of all lightning struck in June.
