Baden-Württemberg: Better in jail than for the AfD: Kretschmann supports the president

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - For the AfD it was a serious affront: President of the state parliament Muhterem Aras (Greens) said in response to a student question that she would rather go to prison for a month than have to be a lifelong member of the AfD. Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann has now backed his party friend: "My answer would not have been so different from that of Ms. Aras," said the head of government on Tuesday in Stuttgart. But he was glad that this question did not really arise.

At the on-site visit on Friday last week, Aras was asked by students at a high school in Stuttgart whether they would rather go to prison for a month or have a lifelong AfD membership. "That's a really tough question," Aras replied. But even if prison would certainly be tough, she would prefer it, she said. With the sentence, the politician earned a lot of applause from the students. AfD parliamentary group leader Bernd Gögel spoke on Monday of a derailment and abuse of office.
