Baden-Württemberg: bitter start to school due to severe staff shortages

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - According to the Association of Philologists, the announced 500 additional teaching positions for the schools are far from sufficient to cover the need in view of the severe shortage of staff. "1,200 to 2,000 additional jobs are needed just to educate the 18,000 to 30,000 Ukrainian children and young people," said the chairman of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Philologists, Ralf Scholl, on Thursday in Stuttgart.

At the beginning of the week, the leaders of the coalition agreed to create almost 1,700 new jobs in the 2023/2024 budget. There will be 700 new jobs in education, including 500 for new teachers.

Scholl also criticized the supply of teachers in all types of schools compared to the previous school year, and painted a bleak picture of the start of school next Monday: "All reserves have already been activated at the beginning of the school year. The gaps could not all be closed, the substitution lists are mostly empty." In view of the foreseeable corona infections, very high sick leave is to be expected. "Since there are no substitutes, this will lead to massive lesson cancellations," Scholl warned.
