Baden-Württemberg: Bomb evacuation affects around 5,000 people

Rastatt (dpa / lsw) - According to the police, around 5000 people are affected by the evacuation because of a World War II bomb in Rastatt. It's about the citizens of the districts of Niederbühl, the Münchfeldsiedlung and Leopoldplatz. For those affected who cannot stay with friends or acquaintances, alternative options have been set up in the Badnerhalle, among other places.

The war relic, weighing around 250 kilograms, was discovered near the Karlsruhe-Basel railway line on Friday afternoon during construction work. After evaluating the approximately 80 centimeter long dud, the explosive ordnance disposal service came to the conclusion that it would have to be blown up in a controlled manner at the site later that day.

According to the police and the city, there was no precise timetable for this. The whole thing could drag on into the evening hours.
