Baden-Württemberg: bomb find: 500-kilo duds are defused

Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - After a 500-kilo bomb was found on a construction site in Karlsruhe, preparations for defusing it should begin in the morning. Houses within a radius of 500 meters of the site are to be evacuated, the city said. This should last from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It was not immediately known how many residents were affected. People in need of help can request help via the citizen telephone. A nursing home is to serve as accommodation for those affected for the duration of the defusing.

Significant restrictions on road and rail traffic are expected. The railway line between Karlsruhe main station and Durlach is to be closed, as is the Mannheim-Basel line and the tracks of the goods station. Traffic on the B10 will also be interrupted for the time of the defusing.

The dud from World War II was found on Stuttgarter Strasse on Monday. The explosive ordnance disposal service was supposed to defuse the bomb on Tuesday.
