Baden-Württemberg: broken switch disrupts rail traffic between Stuttgart and Ulm

Ulm (dpa / lsw) - A switch fault near Wendlingen causes obstructions on the new line between Stuttgart and Ulm. Trains from the state capital to the south have to be diverted via the old, slower route over the Alb, as the railways announced on Monday on request. There are no train cancellations, said a railway spokeswoman. The switch is new. "The malfunction is a manufacturer defect in an electronic component that needs to be replaced."

From the south, the long-distance and regional trains will run over the new line as planned. "We assume that the disruption will be resolved by tomorrow," said the spokeswoman.

The new line between Ulm and Wendlingen, which cost around four billion euros, was inaugurated on December 9 after ten years of construction. It is intended to ensure that travelers between Ulm and Stuttgart reach their destination a quarter of an hour faster. It has been in regular operation for more than a week.
