Baden-Württemberg: burn injuries: sometimes “challenging” for hospitals

Stuttgart/Freiburg (dpa/lsw) - The improper use of fireworks has put additional strain on the emergency rooms of hospitals in Baden-Württemberg. In the Stuttgart Clinic, for example, several patients had to be treated on Sunday night, including three patients with serious injuries, especially in the facial area. "Two patients had eyesight threats. They were leaning over and looking into batteries of fireworks when they exploded," said the ER's executive director, Dr. Alexander Krohn, on Sunday of the German Press Agency. Several patients were also injured by firecrackers fired into the crowd. "It was a challenging night," said Krohn, and also reported on "increasingly violent patients."

The Freiburg University Hospital, on the other hand, recorded a "normal incidence" of burn injuries. "It was a completely normal New Year's Eve, just like before the corona pandemic. We had a lot to do, but we're used to it," said senior physician Dr. Katrin Fink of the dpa.

The Freiburg district association of the German Red Cross (DRK) spoke of "very quiet hours" up to 4 a.m. in the morning. However, the police had to "protect" the emergency services at times.
