Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - A lightning strike during a thunderstorm triggered a fire in the roof of a family home in Karlsruhe - and caused a lot of damage. A neighbor noticed smoke on the roof of the house in the Rintheim district on Tuesday evening and informed the residents, who then left the building, the police said in the evening.
The fire brigade found that part of the roof was on fire, and a smoldering fire had also started in the insulation area, it was said. The emergency services extinguished the fire after a short time. The officials estimated the damage at around 100,000 euros. However, the building is still habitable and no one was injured. There were no other weather-related operations in the evening, said a police spokesman when asked.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had warned of severe thunderstorms in parts of Baden-Württemberg, including in the Karlsruhe administrative district.
