Baden-Württemberg: Citizens in North Rhine-Westphalia pay the highest property tax of all non-city states

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - On average, people in North Rhine-Westphalia pay the highest property tax of all non-city states in Germany. This is the result of a study by the consulting company Ernst, which was published on Friday

At 551 percent, North Rhine-Westphalia is also the frontrunner when it comes to the average assessment rate for property tax B, which is levied on developed and developable properties and paid by owners or passed on to tenants. On average, it was 386 percent nationwide in 2021.

There are large differences in the assessment rates between the municipalities nationwide. At the end of 2021, the two Hessian municipalities of Lorch and Lautertal were the front runners, each with 1050 percent. The North Rhine-Westphalian Bergneustadt followed as the first NRW representative with 959 percent in fifth place in the ranking. However, according to the study, 31 of the 50 German municipalities with the highest rates nationwide were in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Due to a tax reform for 2025, owners have to send new property tax returns to the tax office by October of this year. It is still uncertain how the property tax reform will affect the assessment rates, EY said.
