Baden-Württemberg: court rejects lawsuit against mayor election in Laupheim

Sigmaringen/Laupheim (dpa/lsw) - The CDU politician Kevin Wiest has failed with his lawsuit against the mayoral election in Laupheim. The administrative court in Sigmaringen dismissed the lawsuit brought by the candidate who lost only seven votes in the April 24 election, a spokesman for the court announced on Wednesday.

With his lawsuit, Wiest wanted to have the mayor election of the 23,000-inhabitant town in the Biberach district declared invalid and a new election ordered. At the very least, the election result should be overturned and the result reassessed. The plaintiff cited several procedural errors in the election as the reason for his lawsuit. For example, the municipal election committee should not have made a recount on request. The city and the regional council of Tübingen had rejected a new count, as this was not legally permissible due to the close result alone. The administrative court also pointed out that Wiest should have presented any errors in the vote within a week. This hadn't happened.

The regional council in Tübingen had previously rejected Wiest's objection to the mayoral election. The winner of the election at the time was the SPD politician Ingo Bergmann. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
