Baden-Württemberg: Diatoms provide a green shimmer on Lake Constance

Langenargen (dpa/lsw) - In many places on Lake Constance, shimmering Caribbean-green plankton algae can be seen. It is mostly unicellular diatoms, as the Institute for Lake Research (ISF) announced on Friday in Langenargen (Lake Constance district). The plankton algae remove carbon dioxide from the water, which causes tiny limestone crystals to form in the water. These scattered the light back and together with the light green of these microscopic algae and the blue reflection of the sky made the lake shine turquoise.

According to the researchers, the warm weather means that underwater plants also grow more vigorously in the shallow water areas at this time of year. Like a belt, they settle around the whole lake at the appropriate depth and grow towards the surface with long stems and leaves. Many people refer to the plants as seaweed, while experts call them macrophytes. According to the experts, they serve as a nursery for many fish, ensure clear water, produce oxygen and also form a certain erosion protection for the bank and the shallow water.
