Baden-Württemberg: Duds in Mannheim successfully defused

Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - A dud from the Second World War was successfully defused in Mannheim on Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the city said in the evening that experts from the explosive ordnance disposal service needed only half an hour to render the bomb harmless. The dud was then removed.

The 250-kilogram bomb was found on Tuesday afternoon during construction work on the banks of the Neckar. Around 1000 people had to leave their apartments and houses within a 500 meter radius of the site. For the duration of the defusing, a care room was set up in a school for residents who could not stay with relatives, friends or elsewhere. Patients who were bedridden received free ambulance transport.

The city gave the all-clear early in the evening, and all citizens were able to return to their houses and apartments.
