Reutlingen (dpa / lsw) - The former Daimler boss Edzard Reuter sees social media as a danger to social cohesion and in the political effect. The 94-year-old told the "Reutlinger General-Anzeiger" (Saturday) that it was not just the fake news, but also the many conspiracy theories that no one had the time to really examine. "Our social order has always been based on the fact that somewhere there is a consensus of rationality and truth." Society and democracy only work if people participate.
Dealing with social media no longer has anything to do with reflecting on what you have read, said Reuter. "I'm not one of the optimists when it comes to this development. On the other hand, surprisingly, I keep meeting younger people who themselves are starting to think about whether everything can really go well." That gives him hope.
Edzard Reuter is the son of the former Berlin Mayor Ernst Reuter and was Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz from 1987 to 1995. He is an honorary citizen of Berlin and is involved in many cultural and scientific support groups and foundations. The non-profit Helga and Edzard Reuter Foundation, for example, supports people and institutions who want to promote integration.
