Baden-Württemberg: "excavator driver" process begins in Donaueschingen

An entrepreneur is said to have gotten into an excavator and demolished a large new building in the Black Forest. A good year later, the man is tried. According to the lawyer, it was an act of desperation.

Donaueschingen (dpa / lsw) - Because he is said to have intentionally damaged a new building complex with an excavator, a contractor is on trial today (1.30 p.m.) in Donaueschingen (Schwarzwald-Baar district). The 48-year-old is accused of destroying buildings, according to the district court.

According to earlier police reports, the unusual incident in Blumberg (Schwarzwald-Baar district) in July last year caused property damage of around half a million euros. As a result, no one was harmed. The suspect had torn down several balconies with the tracked vehicle and destroyed parts of the building facade.

The defendant admits the crime and regrets the consequences for the tenants, his lawyer Sebastian Göthlich told the German Press Agency. At the time, the man was desperate because of discrepancies in the construction process.

As the police reported at the time, the entrepreneur also damaged garages where gas bottles were standing. Officials cordoned off the site at the time because of fears of an explosion. After the orgy of destruction, the man drove away in his car, but later turned himself in to the police. According to the court, the verdict is likely to fall on Thursday.
