Baden-Württemberg: Fabian Wohlgemuth new sports director at VfB Stuttgart

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Fabian Wohlgemuth will be the new sports director of VfB Stuttgart. The 43-year-old succeeds Sven Mislintat and has signed a contract until June 30, 2025, as the Swabian Bundesliga club announced on Saturday. Wohlgemuth comes from the second division SC Paderborn. He previously worked there as a sports manager.

The Swabians parted ways with Mislintat after talks lasting several days and after around three and a half years. VfB had presented the 50-year-old with a "fair market offer to extend the contract", which Mislintat rejected.

"With the new appointment to the position of sports director, we want to set both a new impetus and a sign of continuity on our way," said CEO Alexander Wehrle about Wohlgemuth's commitment. The new man fits "perfectly into our profile," emphasized Wehrle.

After Wohlgemuth's commitment, VfB is now also looking for a new head coach. Pellegrino Matarazzo was eliminated in October after a disappointing start to the season. His assistant coach Michael Wimmer stepped in for the six Bundesliga games before the winter break. With the departure from Mislintat, however, it became less likely that Wimmer would become head coach in the long term.

According to media reports, the top candidate is Bruno Labbadia, who looked after VfB from December 2010 to August 2013. Wohlgemuth and Labbadia know each other from their time together at VfL Wolfsburg. There Wohlgemuth headed the youth department of Lower Saxony.

In terms of sport, VfB is once again in the relegation battle and spends the winter in 16th place in the table. The team's first task after the winter break is on January 21 against FSV Mainz 05.
