Baden-Württemberg: Fewer orders for mechanical engineering

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - The mechanical and plant engineering companies in Baden-Württemberg received significantly fewer orders in April than a year earlier. The state association of the VDMA announced on Friday in Stuttgart that incoming orders had fallen by 15 percent. The decline in Germany was particularly strong at minus 22 percent. Abroad, the minus was 11 percent.

The managing director of the VDMA Baden-Württemberg, Dietrich Birk, said that the decline in April was significant, which, however, had to be put in relation to the extremely high order intake in the same month last year. "Regardless of this, the consequences of the Ukraine war and a general reluctance to invest are clearly noticeable."

Due to the high growth of 16 percent in February, the three-month period from February to April was still slightly up by 1 percent.

The VDMA recently lowered the production forecast for Germany for the current year, which had only been reduced from seven percent to four percent in March. The association now only expects real production growth of one percent for 2022 as a whole.
