Baden-Württemberg: Fire: Seriously injured and half a million euros in damage

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - A man was seriously injured in a fire in a ground floor apartment in Karlsruhe - there was also property damage of around half a million euros. The man was rescued from the burning apartment and taken to the hospital with severe burn injuries, a fire department spokesman said early Tuesday morning. In addition, another resident was also transported to a hospital - probably with smoke inhalation.

How the fire started is still unclear. "When we arrived, flames were already sticking out of the windows and the apartment was on fire," said the spokesman. The fire did not spread to the other apartments. But the smoke affected them, the spokesman said. The stairwell is also not accessible because of the smoke. A total of 21 people were rescued from the four-story apartment building, including several with the hurdy-gurdy from the upper floors of windows and balconies.

All residents cannot return to their apartments for the time being. The ground floor apartment is not habitable. The fire brigade estimates the damage to property at 500,000 euros.
