Baden-Württemberg: Firefighter in custody for arson

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - A Stuttgart firefighter has been taken into custody on suspicion of arson. The 19-year-old was released from work immediately after the allegations became known at the end of September, the Stuttgart fire department announced on Tuesday. According to police and prosecutors, he was arrested on Sunday and brought before a magistrate on Monday. The young man is said to have caused several fires in Stuttgart-Stammheim. Among other things, he is said to have set fire to a stack of pallets outside a joinery at the end of September, so that the flames spread to a production hall. He is also suspected of having set fire to Euro pallets on company premises and a paper bin in August.

"We are affected by the serious allegations against a fire brigade member," said head of department and fire brigade commander Georg Belge on Tuesday. More than 1,500 full-time and volunteer emergency services are involved in the Stuttgart fire brigade to save lives, alleviate suffering and avert damage. The allegations in the room are not compatible with the values of the fire brigade.
