Baden-Württemberg: Foundation board elects successor to ZKM boss Peter Weibel

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - The Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe is getting a new boss: As announced by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Art, the Board of Trustees will decide next Monday on the successor to the long-standing director Peter Weibel (78). The Mayor of Karlsruhe and Chairman of the Foundation Council Frank Mentrup (SPD) will then announce the decision at a press conference (1 p.m.) together with State Secretary for the Arts Petra Olschowski.

The artist and art theorist Weibel has headed the ZKM since 1999. Born in Odessa in March 1944 and raised in an Austrian home, he studied film, medicine and mathematics in Paris and Vienna before ending up in performance art. In 1968, for example, he had his colleague Valie Export lead him through Vienna on all fours and on a dog leash. He later made a name for himself as an exhibition organizer and art theorist with a focus on video and computers.
