Iffezheim (dpa/lsw) - Best Lightning under jockey Martin Seidl won the 44th Baden mile, endowed with 70,000 euros, at the start of the spring meeting on the racecourse in Iffezheim. In the most important 1600 meter race of the spring, the four-year-old stallion prevailed on Thursday in front of the gates of Baden-Baden in an exciting finish against Zavaro under Albert Sanna and secured his owner a prize money of 40,000 euros. Third was Parol with Adrie de Vries in front of 10,500 spectators.

The winner Best Lightning, trained by Andreas Suborics in Cologne, belongs to the Austrian stable Ad Episas owned by Hermann Pfister and achieved the fourth career win for him. Jockey Seidl had only had an operation on his nose the day before, which he broke a week ago at a race in Hanover. "Fixed and operated on the broken nose yesterday, won this race today. It doesn't get any better than that," said the jockey. The spring meeting continues on Saturday and Sunday with two more days of racing.
