Baden-Württemberg: Hauk: Organic products perform very well in eco-monitoring

Year after year, the state checks organic products in its eco-monitoring. And year after year it is satisfied - with slight drawbacks.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - According to State Minister of Agriculture Peter Hauk (CDU), organic nutrition has also gained in popularity over the past year. "The trend of the last few years could also be seen in 2021," said Minister of Agriculture Peter Hauk (CDU) on Monday in Stuttgart. "Organic foods are booming." Not only have nationwide sales increased by five percent, the quality is also better than that of ordinary commercial products. This emerges from the new eco-monitoring report. "Organic fresh fruit and vegetables are still significantly less contaminated with residues than conventionally produced goods," said Hauk.

According to the report, the Chemical and Veterinary Investigation Offices of Baden-Württemberg (CVUAs) examined around 550 organic products last year, from fruit and vegetables to olives and juices. Among other things, possible pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms or the origin and authenticity of organic eggs, organic milk and organic dairy products were discussed. "As in previous years, there were only isolated cases in which further research and measures were required," said the minister. Around 98 percent of all samples in the trade rightly bear the eco-seal with regard to the use of pesticides.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, 14.5 percent of the agricultural area in Baden-Württemberg is farmed organically. More than every tenth farm in the country is an organic farm (13.5 percent). According to the ministry, the monitoring is unique in Germany.
