Baden-Württemberg: Health insurance: More and more men suffer from migraines

Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - According to the Barmer health insurance company, more and more men in Baden-Württemberg are suffering from migraines. In 2020, two and a half percent of men in the country were diagnosed with headache attacks, Barmer announced on Thursday in Stuttgart. The rate of those affected is three times as high among women, said state manager Winfried Plötze. "However, we see a much higher rate of increase among men." The diagnosis rate for men has increased by a good 25 percent within ten years, compared to 15.6 percent for women.

The reason for this development does not emerge from the Barmer data. However, environmental influences are conceivable, including stress. But it is also possible that more and more men are admitting to this disease and are seeking medical help.

Most affected men are between 20 and 29 years old. In this age group, around four percent are affected. Among the women in Baden-Württemberg, it was primarily the 40 to 49 year olds who suffered from migraines, which can be accompanied by nausea and loss of appetite, sensitivity to light and visual disturbances. In addition to stress, lack of sleep, caffeine, red wine and noise are also triggers. The findings are based on the extrapolated data of the 778,000 (2020) Barmer policyholders in the southwest.
