Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - How do people perceive their environment and what senses do animals and plants use? That's what an exhibition in the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe is all about from this Thursday - until September 10, 2023. The special exhibition "Of Senses" offers numerous listening, smelling and touch stations. Visitors learn why the sensory organs of humans and animals sometimes differ significantly.

From the rat, which explores its surroundings with whiskers, to dolphins and sharks, which use their electrical sense to search for food, to the parasitic dodder, which sniffs out its host plant and then grows with it: the show illustrates this with animal preparations, models, diagrams and texts , videos and interactive stations with which sometimes ingenious tricks are used to encourage animals and plants to reproduce or lure their victims into the trap to eat.

As project manager Constanze Hampp said on Wednesday, the exhibition also wants to give disabled people a museum experience for all their senses. There are texts in Braille for the blind. In addition, a tactile floor guidance system, sponsored by the museum's circle of friends, guides visitors through the show.
