Baden-Württemberg: Hesitant response to property tax returns

The new property tax has already caused trouble for many owners. Filling out the electronic form is complicated. The deadline expires at the end of January.

Stuttgart (dpa/lsw) - Property owners are still hesitant to submit their property tax returns. Shortly before Christmas, the tax quota was around 43 percent, as a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Finance explained in Stuttgart. "Experience has shown that more declarations are filed as the deadline approaches." A total of 5.6 million properties are to be revalued in the southwest. The extension of the deadline for property tax B ends on January 31, 2023. This is followed by a reminder procedure.

According to the will of the tax authorities, the declaration of determination must be submitted electronically. Paper forms should only be permitted in exceptional cases. According to the Ministry of Finance in Stuttgart - unlike in other federal states - only the file number, the property area, the standard land value and possibly the predominant use for residential purposes are queried. The standard land value is determined by the expert committee of the respective municipality. It reflects the average location value of the floor in euros per square meter within a specific area. Information about the type of property, the living and usable area or the year of construction is not required.

From 2025 onwards, a new property tax calculation is to apply. This is done on the basis of information that owners now have to submit.
