Baden-Württemberg: Historic tree nursery in Schwetzingen back in operation

Schwetzingen (dpa/lsw) - In order to preserve the tree population in the state's parks and gardens in the long term, the historic tree nursery in the Schwetzingen palace garden (Rhein-Neckar district) has been revived. Experts experimented here with tree species that could already cope in extremely dry areas, the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg announced on Friday.

There are also attempts to achieve a deep-reaching root system when replanting. Oaks, rust chestnuts and cherries, for example, form a taproot even as seedlings, which can reach a meter deep into the ground. Like other plants, the old trees in the country's parks and gardens are also exposed to the effects of climate change.
