Around 10,000 people in Baden-Baden are without electricity for hours. The Merkur cable car is also not running and the internet is partially paralysed.
Baden-Baden (dpa/lsw) - The sheathing of power cables in Baden-Baden melted and led to a large-scale power failure on Wednesday night. The public utilities announced this on request; the SWR had previously reported this. Around 10,000 people are affected, and the emergency call and traffic lights also failed. The Internet was also disrupted throughout the city, according to the Stadtwerke website. The Merkur mountain railway is also out of service until further notice.
The massive disruption had begun just before midnight. The power supply in the city center east of Hindenburgplatz to Geroldsau and Oberbeuern has now been largely restored, the city said. The spokeswoman for the public utility company said they are working flat out to completely eliminate the disruption. It could be as early as the afternoon. At first, the municipal utility said it would be able to completely restore the power supply in the morning.
"It is important that all devices that are currently not urgently needed are disconnected from the power supply," a city spokesman said in the morning. In addition, the city set up contact points at seven locations with the help of the fire department. Five vehicles are to make loudspeaker announcements in the districts concerned.
