Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - Even before the actual Martin's Day on Friday, numerous children in Baden-Württemberg are moving through the streets this week. Lantern parades are planned across the country in many places. Some of them are accompanied by riders on horses. The Martins celebrations are particularly popular with families, said a spokeswoman for the Stuttgart city deanery. Dozens of events are planned in the state capital alone, and hundreds of visitors are expected.

Traditionally, the lantern procession on November 11th commemorates Saint Martin. Christians celebrate St. Martin as the patron saint of the poor. According to legend, as a young soldier, Martin of Tours shared his cloak with a freezing beggar.
